Ready to Relieve PMS?

By Steph LoweIn Articles, Gut HealthPosted November 26, 2021

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) - we know it’s common, but that doesn’t make it normal. It pains me to know that as much as 85% of menstruating women report having one or more PMS symptoms and that 7% of those suffer from symptoms so bad that it affects their daily function....

By Steph LoweIn Articles, Gut HealthPosted October 11, 2021

As Hippocrates once said, “All disease begins in the gut”. At The Natural Nutritionist, we believe the equal and opposite to be true, which is that all good health begins in the gut. It’s for this reason we place such emphasis on digestive health in the clinic.

I know you have been told otherwise, but here is h I know you have been told otherwise, but here is how to truly test (and therefore accurately interpret) your iron levels. Save this post!

1. Test after an 8-10 hour fast, with no supplements, high intensity exercise or alcohol for 48 hours prior.
2. Test rested, and this means no exercise prior.
3. Include hemoglobin to truly understand iron stores.
4. Include CRP to to rule out a pseudo-iron deficiency driven by inflammation.
5. Where relevant, test in week 3 of her/your menstrual cycle.

Now, let me guess, you weren’t told this prior to your last iron test?

If you’ve tested non-fasted, ferritin will be artificially lower as the iron has moved from the liver into the circulation where it is required. Even a cup of tea with a dash of milk is non-fasted.

By all means check for these root causes but we mu By all means check for these root causes but we must consider menstrual blood losses, where anything >80ml/period is an issue.

And, if anyone tells her (or you) to take 1 or more Maltofer or Ferro-grad C per day, run for the hills.

You can not absorb 100+ mg of iron/day. Attempting to will cause high serum hepcidin levels, decreased gut iron absorption and actually make your supplement ineffective.

As I’ve said many times, the foundation of balan As I’ve said many times, the foundation of balanced hormones comes from nutritional and lifestyle basics. From there, supplements can be incredibly powerful.

Vitex is a true reminder of how much medicine exists in nature. It is one of my favourite herbs to use in clinic however there are some clear dos and do nots.

Do:
1. Take a low dose.
2. Take first thing in the morning.
3. Use with confirmed low progesterone and low or normal estrogen.
4. Use in hypothalamic amenorrhea.
5. Take a break of one month every year in long term use.

Do not:
1. Use with high estrogen, unless a full hormone assessment supports efficacy.
2. Use with high luteinising hormone (LH).
3. Use in PCOS, due to high LH.
4. Combine with assisted reproductive technology hormones, when there is a risk of ovarian hyperstimulation.
5. Use in teenage years, due to the developing HPO-axis.
6. Take long term without regular breaks.

Post inspired by @larabriden.

FYI - it’s otherwise known as chaste tree and in a surprising number of mainstream hormone balancing blends, so check your ingredients carefully.

How? 🥑 It starts with a wholefood approach, wi How?

🥑 It starts with a wholefood approach, with enough calories, macronutrients (specifically fats and protein) and micronutrients (specifically magnesium, vitamin C, vitamin E and B6) for hormone production.

💊 Next in line is magnesium and taurine, an incredible combination for women’s health and longevity.

👉🏼 Start with 300-350mg of magnesium glycinate combined with 3g taurine/day. Some women need double this at certain points in their cycle, especially if their anxiety is pre-menstrual.

💥 This power combo is also useful in high estrogen pictures like heavy menstrual bleeding, PMS, PMDD and for perimenopausal hot flashes.

🌿 There are also some incredible herbs that can be used for anxiety - more on this to come. Nature is our original “farmacy”.
